COMMITTEE

Hi, I’m Krzysztof, a Part II biochemist and the Whiston president for this year! I look forward to making sure that the Whiston Society is there for all science enthusiasts and scientists at Clare during this challenging year. I am also involved with BioSoc (hence the Varsity Sci shares!) as well as rowing badly, and have been known to make models of glycolysis out of matchsticks a very long time ago! I also enjoy yerba mate, long bike rides and books by Lem - in the original, of course! Fun science fact: the textbook model of how DNA fits inside the nucleus is amazingly inaccurate - it’s far messier! Hi! I'm Savanna, a 3rd year Bio NatSci studying pharmacology, who will be your Vice President! I also squeeze playing squash and fives into the hectic degree, as well as running the gameshow Spouse and Spouse™! I hope to help Whiston Society to become more engaging and fun, though interactive quizzes and presentations! Fun fact about science: There are bacteria living in clouds! Hi! I'm Parley, a first year PhD student doing Mathematics. I was in Clare back in 2018/19 reading an MPhil in Economic Research, and, quite similar to many other committee members I have a wide range of academic interests, ranging from pure maths, statistics, to economics and finance. I also hacked a lot in recent years, there was quite a lot of fun. Sport-wise I row a bit and swim as well. I also started to play octopush but there does not seem to be a team in Cambridge <insert a sad face here>. Fun fact about me: When I typed this bio I’m still officially a student at the other place. Fun fact about science: Statistical significance does not have a spot in pure maths, unless the limit is taken to the boundary points. Hi, I'm Eliza, a Part II zoologist and one of your speakers officers this year! I'm looking forward to working with Kate to find great speakers for our events this year, as well as communicating with you to help sort out organisational matters if you'd like to speak with us! In my spare time I also look after Biosoc's financial matters as treasurer, occasionally row, and enjoy needlework and playing the piano and clarinet. Fun science fact: the strongest bacterium can pull 100,000 times its own weight! Hi, I’m Kate, I’m a part IB natsci and one of the speakers’ officers for this year. I’m interested in many different areas of science, especially organic chemistry, developmental biology and genetics. I also enjoy going running and playing football for college. I’m really excited to set up some great talks for this year! Fun science fact: the flowers of the bee orchid look and smell like female bees in order to trick male bees into mating with them; in doing so they transfer pollen from other bee orchids! Hi! I'm Jas(mine) and I'm working with Katie as one of the Social secs. In third year, I'm specialising in Chemistry, having done a mismatch of Natsci options in my IA and IB years. If I'm not in the library, you can usually find me in Spoons or Cindies (and I row a bit on the side too!). My fun science fact: the tonic water in my gin glows under UV light because it contains quinine (it looks very cool in Cellars!) Hi! I’m Katie, a third year bio NatSci studying Plant Sciences and, more importantly, one of this year’s Whiston society social secs!! I’m looking forward to working with Jas to make this year as fun and social(ly distanced) as possible, despite the crazy circumstances. In my spare time I like to play my flute, chill with friends and go swimming. Fun science fact: some elephants have what some may refer to as a ‘fifth leg’- hmu if you want this explaining… Hi! I’m Alice and I’m one of your publicity officers! I’m 3rd year Natsci specialising in PDN and look forward to bringing you all the Whiston news this year (make sure to follow our Insta, Facebook and Twitter!) I am currently captain of the Blues cheerleading team and enjoy training and competing (especially beating Oxford in varsity!), and am excited for the Whiston events already being planned! Fun science fact for you- humans are the only animals with chins!? Hi, I’m Leah, a part IB Bio NatSci and one of the Publicity Officers for this year. If you want to find me, 80% of the time I’ll probably be on the tennis court, and the other 20% I’ll be hanging out with friends. I’m looking forward to working with Alice and the rest of the team to expand the Whiston network! Fun science fact: messages from the human brain travel at speeds of around 200mph! Hi, I'm Ellie, a second year Natsci at Clare and the sponsorship officer for the Whiston Society this year! Passionate about astrobiology and earth sciences in general (yes - I like rocks), I am also known to frequent movie societies as an excuse to explore other colleges, and occasionally kayak on the river cam. I look forward to securing sponsorships and helping out the team in whatever ways I can! Fun fact about science: Earth's true age of 4.56 billion years has only been known for about as long as we've had Tom Hanks around, and the first exoplanet was confirmed about one Selena Gomez ago. Hi! I’m Matt, a Part III Atmospheric Chemist! I’ve been a member of the Whiston Committee for three year now so should be an old hand at organising science events. This year I’m helping out with a Whiston magazine. Fun science fact: if you removed the empty space from all the atoms of all people, the entire human race could fit in the volume of a sugar cube.
